Reviews of Diamondback Wildwood Citi Men's Comfort Bike

1.) Great Bike

Bought this bike to start exercising again and get back in shape. Gained alot of weight due to an injury. Needed a bike that was comfortable and could support me. Been riding about 3 miles per day, 4 days per week, for about 6 months now and no problems at all. Bike is very comfortable. When you buy this bike, I had the option of the curved back handle bars or the straight ones. Bought the curved ones thinking they would be more comfortable, but had an awkward angle on my wrists. The straight bars are more comfortable.

I bought this bike for my father for Christmas, since his Mongoose had been stolen. He had basically changed the Mongoose into a comfort bike, by changing the tires, seat, and handlebars to fit him better. But, even with all of those mods this bike rides so much easier than that one did!

Putting it together took a little know how, but not much. You will need to buy a kickstand, ($7.50 at the local Walmart.) and a set of allen wrenches.

The only trouble with the bike, is that now I want one too!

I just got my bike from Amazon and it's great so far. There were no scratches and the rims were straight. With the free shipping and zero sales tax it turned out to be a much better deal than Sports Authority. It has been awhile since I rode a bike and this was the perfect style for me to gear back up. I used to have a Diamondback BMX when I was a kid and it was a great bike so I was excited to see this cruiser. The parent company is Raleigh so I have high hopes.

I bought this bike today, though not from Amazon. I love Amazon but some avid cycling friends recommended I go to a shop to at least test ride and find the right frame size, fit, etc. That was some of the best advice I ever got, and followed. You need to make sure the bike you're going to buy is a good fit for your body. Seriously.

Now, about the bike:
This is my first bicycle of any kind in 25 years or so. I'm 6'1", 335 lbs, and have a 31" inseam with my shoes on. The large frame size on the Citi is an excellent fit, in my case, and amazingly, the bike hasn't crumbled under my weight! LOL. Anyway, it's heavier than the aluminum frame Wildwood but it's still lighter than what I expected and what I remembered of my old 10 speed from 25 years ago. The ride is very comfortable due to the seat post and front fork suspension, the upright riding position, the generously cushioned saddle, and the large tires. The shifters are smooth, as is the peddling, and the brakes are responsive. I bought this because riding bikes was something I always really enjoyed when I was younger and that could also be called exercise and obviously, I need some exercise... Granted, I've only had the bike for a few hours but am very pleased with it so far. Finally, you can't beat the price for the value you get with this bike. If anything changes, I'll update this review but for now, I'm happy (and a little sore.)

Update 7/28/10:
I've ridden the bike a couple times now and am still very pleased with it. My legs are a little sore (to be expected) but not my back, and that was a big concern.

This was a Birthday present for my Husband. Although the peddle was clonking, we replaced it. It's the best bike he has owned. It's perfectly comfortable, he rides an average of 14 miles a day and loves it.

Very good bike for a great price. Dicks Sporting Goods in Michigan, selling them for $[...]+ Tax = $[...]. I purchased from Amazon for $[...] (no tax), saved $63. Like I said, a solid good riding bike accept for the handle bars, grips and shifters. I didn't like the comfort style handle bars and the "soft touch" shifters they advertise are cheap. A bit to soft. just touch them and they will shift back a gear, also very hard to adjust. Went to my local bike shop and purchased a new straighter style handle bar, Shimmono lever style shifters/brake combo, and ergo style soft grips.
$[...] later and now I have the bike I was looking for. So much for my $63 savings, but at least the bike works great now. As for the other guy who posted about his brake caliper springs popping out, You need to adjust the 2 small screws at the pivot point on each side of the brake calipers. Turn these screws in, as this will tighten the spring pressure. I have mine turned just about all the way in. Never had any more problems with springs popping out.

Bought the bike about three weeks ago and, as other reviewers have noted, it is a 'sturdy' bike frame (translation the frame is indestructible but heavy). The wheels are great and assembly was a breeze. The reason I am writing this review is to start a note about the fact that the chain broke on me on my 9-10th ride and maybe this is a fluke but if anyone else notes it, then it may be worth taking caution.

I've had this bike a few months now and is ideal for pootling around town. My only complaint would be the squeaky saddle and the need to adjust the front gear levers on a regular basis, other than that, it's a solid piece of engineering at a great price.

Purchased this bike as an Amazon Warehouse Open box deal... for the price I paid, I would most definately say it was a far better purchase than a Walmart bike as other reviewers noted. The bike came in a box that had been ripped open, but taped back together and shipped to me. The bike was in perfect shape itself along with all parts, maybe I got lucky. I am 28 and it was relatively easy to put together and I havent touched a bike since i was 12. The brakes and shifters needed adjustments but i figured this much, as well as the front and back wheel bearing/axle to get it to spin straight and smooth. The wheels seem cheap and thin in comparison to bikes I am used to seeing, but they do spin straight and work as they should. In the end, I think the bike is outstanding for the money spent, but as other reviewers note, it is somewhat heavier than an aluminum frame bike, so beware if weight is important. I plan to use this bike as exercise and basically as an around town cruiser bike path/street bike... if it takes more effort for me to use it, so be it, im not afraid of a little work and sweat. Im sure there are much better bikes for commuters or professional bikers, i did find it in the "comfort bike" section so it is what i expect. I gave three stars due to the heavy weight and some cheapness found in the parts and the fact that i dislike the handlebar design, although i still believe it to be a solid bike. Also, I think the handlebars are a little on the weird and old fashioned side... i purchased a replacement handlebar for 12 bucks on amazon because it is annoying to hold the handles at the angle... im sure its normal for a comfort bike, but i find it awkward to control and also less appealing.

10.) Good Value for the Price

Got this for a good price before Christmas with free shipping. Our 14 year old son is 6'3" and the extra large frame looked perfect. It does fit him very nicely. The ergonomics are perfect and the bike is comfortable and fast.

Assembly is extremely easy. Really just needs the handlebars, front wheel, and brakes attached. Easy to do with simple tools. Anybody with basic knowledge of bikes and tools can do it in little time.

HOWEVER...if you do so, you apparently void the otherwise excellent waranty. After just a couple of months of use, the left crank fell off and the entire crank assemply needed to be replaced. Was defective due to stripped threads. Took it into the Diamondback authorized warranty shop in Fresno (Herb Bauer) and was told that the warranty is no good unless an authorized bike shop assembled the bike after purchase. The crank assembly was pre-assembled out of the box - all I did was spin the pedals on. Ended up paying ~$65 for the repair which included a higher quality Shimano crank assembly. They said their professional assembly would have cost $70-$80, so I guess I'm still ahead. But be warned that warranty coverage apparently requires assembly by an authorized shop.

11.) Decent bike, no assembly instructions, ok ride!

We bought this bike for the price...we are getting back into riding and wanted an inexpensive, yet decent bike for riding neighborhood streets. It's been over 6 years since we have owned bikes, so not having assembly instructions was a pain and for the cost of the bike, we weren't paying to have it put together. It took awhile to get the front brake working correctly. It's a decent bike for getting back into riding, but we're guessing it will be replaced within a year or two.

12.) Don't Be Fooled By The Retail Price Tag

I thought that I had found a real Diamondback bicycle for less than half price. I bought it. Then I did my homework. The reviews I read made me regret my impulsive purchase. The only people who will think this is a Diamondback are those who don't know what a Diamondback is. I purchased this bicycle online but not at Amazon or Dick's. I assembled it myself, which I had read would void any warranty (there are no assembly instructions included). By this point I didn't really care about a warranty if it meant spending another fairly large sum to have an authorized dealership assemble it. I was already disappointed when I opened my 46 pound box. After I got it all adjusted, I took my first ride to the grocery store 2 1/2 miles from home, hoping against the odds that it might not be as bad as it seemed. I shopped for a few items and rode back. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a comfortable -- if somewhat strange, ride. The real test came the next day. I put my primary bicycle in the shop and rode the Citi Comfort bike 10.2 miles to work. The drive to work is mostly downhill, so going home is the more challenging ride. Upon returning home, the comfort seat was immediately removed and a smaller seat put on. A big tractor type seat is fine if you are going to cruise on level terrain, but if you actually have to pedal, it becomes a nightmare very quickly. At this point, I have ridden the Citi Comfort bike home from work two times now. I will be glad when the shop calls to say my other bike is ready. I am seriously thinking about getting rid of the huge, yard-wide handlebars, which are probably quite heavy. I am certain that I am getting rid of the twist shifters, because they leave less than three and a half inches of grip to hold onto without touching the overly sensitive shifters and accidentally shifting gears. Speaking of comfort, there is no padding on the handlebar grips. One other criticism is that often when the high gear is selected on the front, the freewheel stays in neutral. So far, I have shifted back to the next smaller sprocket and the second time it shifted okay, but I'm not very comfortable with that situation. At a whopping 46 pounds, that which doesn't kill you might make you stronger. However, if I could go back to the moment before I purchased this bike, I would have strong reservations about it -- strong enough to just say, "No!" Still, I'll make the most of it, as a second bicycle, after a few necessary modifications.

you get what you pay for I guess ...

I hate to be the first person to leave a bad review for this bike but I had several issues with it. Btw, I owned several bikes so I know a bit about bikes

1- grip shifters were loose!!! they did not switch gears easily.

2- springs that holds the brakes in tension pops out of their place randomly which makes it somewhat unsafe

3- front shocks knocks after going through a bump on the road - I am not sure how long they would last

4- as heavy as my SUV

do yourself a favor either invest $100 - $150 more and get a decent bike from a local bike shop OR go to walmart and get a bike with dual suspension for the same money!

Amazon was kind enough to take the bike back :)

This is the second time I order a bike from amazon. The first was defective so I returned it. This time I ordered an XL 21 inch bike, but received a S 15 inch bike instead! As others noted as well, no assembly instructions were in the box, and none to be found on the net either. So I am returning it once again as I am sick and tired of the trouble and Target has some nice already assembled bikes these days!

The Wildwood Citi offers Diamondback's elegant LBC geometry.
The bike is structured around a Hi-Ten Remington Steel frame with Laid Back Comfort (LBC) Geometry and a 45mm suspension fork. The frame and fork combine to create a comfortable, maneuverable ride that's ideal for both beach towns and short neighborhood commutes. The SunRace seven-speed twist shifters and Shimano Mega Range freewheel, meanwhile, create a smooth shifting and coasting experience. And riders will love the dual-density comfort saddle, which is far more accommodating than traditional road bike saddles.

About Diamondback's LBC Geometry
During the development of LBC Geometry, Diamondback engineers were faced with the challenge of making the comfort bike more comfortable and easier to use without compromising its handling and maneuverability. They started by tilting the seat tube back. Way back. This allows the rider to be seated further behind the bottom bracket and in a lower position, which not only makes for a more stable and comfortable ride, but also allows for full leg extension to the pedals. At the same time, the design still keeps the rider seated low enough on the bike that he or she can quickly and easily plant both feet firmly on the ground. The result is happier knees and much easier mounting and dismounting.

Once the rider's ideal position was determined, the engineers recognized two places they could improve the handling of the bike by not changing anything at all. Whereas other companies have been tempted to lengthen the chainstays and tilt the head tube back, Diamondback engineers opted for another approach, leaving the length of the rear end alone to maintain superior shifting performance and stable handling. Then they designed a new comfort handlebar with more back sweep, helping bring the handle grips within reach. Because the angle and location of the head tube remains unchanged, Diamondback didn't compromise the performance of the bike.
